I’ve long since had a love for all things Christmas. I think I may have gotten it from my mom who always did such a fabulous job decorating and making our house beautiful and festive every year. So much more than that though, I love what the season represents, hope. I must admit, however, that the last few years I really haven’t been feeling it. I still love Christmas and all that it represents but for some reason I’ve lost that spark for Christmas decorating. It may be that running the business has me hopping or that as a mom of two young ones it feels like I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in approximately 1256.63 days (but who’s counting). Despite all of this, I did my best to get the tree up and the mantle decorated 🙂
I decided to use my skinny tree this year so I didn’t have to move around furniture and remove pieces to make space. That also meant less ornaments – and therefore less work 🙂 I like to keep the colour scheme of my Christmas decor in keeping with the colours of my house. I find it very restful to use the soft palettes of blues and beiges that coordinate with our existing decor. This is most certainly not a hard and fast rule of mine and if you were to look in my basement you would see bins of Christmas decor in virtually every colour (told you I had issues!). I really love colour and creating different combinations; however I have learned that I personally feel less frantic when things in my home are visually soothing.
I really love using unexpected items in my decor so when I found these marquis signs on clearance I knew that they would not only make a great addition to my inventory for events but they would look great on a Christmas tree!
My tree also has random ornaments (that match, of course!) that we’ve come across as a family. The beautiful glass fish ornament was a souvenir from a vacation a couple of years ago. Some of my favourite items are pieces that may not be the most visually appealing but that have a memory or story attached to them!
The tree topper was a marquis fleur-de-lis – my nod to a love of all things french! Maybe I’ll get a trip to Paris for Christmas…a girl can dream 😉
All of the gifts under the tree are wrapped and decorated to coordinate with the tree and other room decor, but only because I’m a but ridiculous when it comes to the whole matchy-matchy thing.
This year I dressed up the fireplace with beaded garlands and just a few decor elements. My all time favourite thing in the living room has to be the little corner of the mantle that has my thrift store vintage crystal candleholders (I love antiques and vintage pieces) paired with a modern “Merry and Bright” print that I found on etsy.
I’ve been looking for Christmas cushions for a number of years now that were both beautiful and affordable. This year I found these amazing cable knit toss pillows at Jysk.* They were just the subtle touch I wanted for the couch, not to mention the fact that I got them on sale!!!
Stay tuned – tomorrow the Pearls and Spice office decor is coming your way 🙂
